1. DeepSeek Becomes Most Downloaded Generative AI Tool Because of These 3 Factors

At the end of January 2025, DeepSeek, the newly released AI chatbot from China, caused NVIDIA's worst stock plunge and overtook ChatGPT to become the most downloaded free AI tech iOS app in the U.S.

DeepSeek's success is rooted in three key factors, which have given it an edge over its competitors and disrupted the generative AI landscape.

By employing innovative techniques to reduce computational overhead and memory requirements, its R1 model was trained at a significantly lower cost—just under $6 million, compared to the reported $100 million needed to train OpenAI’s GPT-4.

Second, through an advanced model architecture known as the 'mixture of experts' (i.e. smaller, specialised components), operational costs are drastically reduced as tasks are assigned to the most relevant 'expert' to optimise reasoning capabilities.

Finally, on top of the more welcoming open-source approach, DeepSeek has openly released its model’s weights alongside a technical paper explaining its development in AI technology. It invites researchers worldwide to explore, adapt, and refine the model, contrasting sharply with OpenAI's veiled 'black box' approach.

DeepSeek’s efficient training processes, innovative design, and openness collectively point to greater accessibility in the Web3 and AI future, in which smaller tech companies can challenge industry giants without breaking the bank.

2. OpenAI's New 'Deep Research' Mode Advances AI Agent Capabilities

OpenAI has introduced 'Deep Research', its latest AI agent designed to elevate ChatGPT's utility for advanced, multi-step tasks. As the second AI agent rolled out by OpenAI, following last month’s Operator, Deep Research focuses on emulating the work of a diligent research analyst.

Powered by the o3 reasoning model, the AI agent can scour vast amounts of online data, including text, PDFs, and images, to create detailed research reports that help users with complex inquiries.

Deep Research exemplifies OpenAI's commitment to pushing the boundaries of AI agents capable of performing intricate, autonomous roles. While promising, the feature still struggles with challenges like hallucinations, difficulty verifying authoritative sources, and accurately representing uncertainty in its findings. OpenAI acknowledges these shortcomings but highlights upcoming enhancements, including connectivity to private and subscription-based data sources that could make its output more reliable and tailored.

As OpenAI doubles down on developing multi-functional AI agents, Deep Research represents another leap towards enabling truly intelligent systems that help users across professional and personal contexts.

3. Davos 2025 Highlights: Forecasts for AI and Blockchain

The World Economic Forum’s 2025 Annual Meeting in Davos spotlighted AI and blockchain as driving forces for the global economy.

On the AI front, world leaders and industry executives highlighted the rapid expansion of AI applications across sectors. In particular, AI agents emerged as a central theme, with Kevin Weil, OpenAI’s product chief, announcing the proliferation of AI personal assistants designed to augment daily tasks.

Discussions also focused on how AI can revolutionise hyperpersonalisation in consumer goods and energy efficiency, though concerns about AI-driven misinformation and energy consumption tempered the excitement.

Blockchain technology stole the show during a 'Crypto at a Crossroads' panel, where industry frontrunners discussed blockchain's ability to streamline financial systems and empower underserved populations. The panel also explored growing regulatory scrutiny, stablecoin adoption, and the potential interplay between AI and blockchain, in the Web3 space.

4. Bitcoin-Based Launchpad Does a Pump.fun for Runes Meme Market

Bioniq, the creators of a Bitcoin-based collectibles marketplace, have unveiled Odin.fun, a new launchpad to revitalise the struggling Runes meme coin ecosystem.

Inspired by Solana’s Pump.fun platform, Odin.fun seeks to deliver speed and simplicity for meme coin traders. The platform promises two-second transaction finality to complement the rapid nature of the meme coin market.

Odin.fun builds on Bitcoin's existing framework but compensates for the network's limitations—like block times and batch transactions—by integrating Dfinity’s Internet Computer (ICP) blockchain, creating a seamless, app-chain-powered experience dubbed 'Valhalla'.

Runes, Bitcoin’s answer to the meme coin frenzy, initially garnered immense attention but have since struggled with challenges such as high friction during transactions. Odin.fun aims to overcome these hurdles with tools like session keys for streamlined trading and a bonding curve pricing model that transitions tokens to an automated market maker upon reaching a market cap of one Bitcoin.

At the time of writing, Odin.fun is in the beta phase with 200 testers. A full launch is expected on 3 February 2025.
